Regardless of whether you love or hate Walmart, it is one of the most popular places to shop and often for good reason. There are a myriad of ways to shop frugally, but here are some simple tips and tricks to learn how to save money at Walmart.
How to Save Money at Walmart
So many of us have had to shop smarter in order to stretch the buying power of our hard earned dollar. From groceries to electronics, you can start reducing your spending in all departments.
Download the App
With the Walmart app for your smartphone you can:
- Scan weekly circulars.
- Check if an item is in stock or if it ships for free.
- Use the Wish List feature.
Walmart will honor a competitor’s price advertised either online or in a circular ad. Before you leave home to shop, make sure you make a list of what you will be buying and research for lower prices. Apps such as Retale and Flipp make this much easier to manage. Once you get to the checkout lane, simply point out the competitor’s pricing, and you will receive the price match.
Walmart.com often features coupons on their website. Click on “my local store.” Scroll down for coupons. You can clip and print or email to a mobile device.
Use a $2.00 off coupon on an item priced at $1.00. The remaining $1.00 off is applied to your other items or is given to you as cash back. Walmart is one of the few remaining retailers that has this policy.
Social Media Deals
You can also follow Walmart on Facebook. If you sign up for their newsletter, you will have access to occasional giveaways and deals.
Shop the Clearance Area
Online, the easiest way to do this is to simply type “clearance” in the search bar. This will allow you to search through all of the categories that have clearance items.
Most stores have an entire aisle dedicated to clearance items. Learn where your particular store’s clearance section is located. The clearance section at my Walmart is about halfway between the garden center and the seasonal area. At other Walmart stores, their clearance section seems to be near the home goods section. Also, each department tends to have small areas, which is usually on the end-caps where items are marked down throughout the week.
Get to Know Your Butcher’s Discount Day
One of the most difficult items to save money on and also one of the more expensive items in our grocery is meat. Spend a bit of time analyzing the routine of the butcher or get to know them at your local Walmart. They usually have a routine for when they mark down meats. Chances are it’s going to be an early morning, usually right after the butcher gets to work. Finding out what day and time the meat is marked down and getting to the store early that day can scoop you some big savings.
Ask for Price Adjustments
There is nothing more annoying than buying an item, and then a week or two later, seeing that same item on sale for a fabulous discount. If a product you have purchased goes on sale before your return period is over, you can have the difference in price refunded to you.
In the market for a new TV, laptop or Blu-ray player? Check out the refurbished electronics at Walmart.com, you will save 40% or more! They have all been checked and certified after being refurbished and have a similar return policy. You can also purchase an extended warranty just as you do with new electronics.
Use the Savings Catcher app after making purchases if you haven’t done the research before purchasing to make a price match. It is also useful for smaller items that you are less likely to research. It automatically does the research of scanning competitors prices and notifies you by email if it finds lower prices. You can keep a running tally of your refunds and decide when you want to turn in the total amount for a gift card.
If you are shopping online and your items don’t meet the required $50 minimum for shipping, choose the store pickup option. The majority of time items are available for pick up the next day, and some are available the same day.
ShippingPass offers 2-day shipping on all eligible products and free value shipping on select items not included in ShippingPass. It also features free returns either online or in- store. This subscription program is $49/year and offers a 30-day free trial. It began as an invitation-only program and had a waiting list, however, it is now open to everyone.
