Meal planning used to scare me. It seemed like so much work. I’m sure there are many ways to meal plan, but I had to find a system that works for me.
I start my meal planning with my freezer inventory. I lay out breakfast, snacks, lunch, and dinner on a sheet of paper with each day of the week below each. Using the inventory, I plot out meals. I make notes of what other items I might need for the week such as produce. If there are any unplanned meals, I check the ads and plan.
I used to plan in a word doc, but I now like to just write it out. I also tape it to a cabinet in my kitchen. On their own, the kids started to use it as a menu for breakfast each morning. I don’t mind if they mix up the days. This allows them to be independent in the morning. They can grab a yogurt or pop a waffle in the toaster.
Recently, I started pulling out all of the meals from the freezer on Sunday nights. In this way, the foods can start to defrost. It’s easier to reheat on week nights.
