You’ve thrown in another load of laundry, picked up the same toys, and swept the floor for the umpteenth time today. Your body is exhausted, while a sliver of frustration starts growing inside. Maybe your spouse comes home after a long days work and tosses their dirty clothes in the corner of the bedroom. That sigh of defeat rolls out louder than you thought. Take moment, I promise you there’s a story behind that mess.
Where is the blessing?
The Pile of Laundry
You have a family that works hard and plays hard and that pile of laundry is a result of that. But that means there is food on the table and memories of playing in the dirt or running around during playground time.
That paint stained shirt that you pulled off your son meant that you sat and spent quality time, even if it was a little messy.
Perhaps you or your husband quickly escaped the work clothes to don a more comfy set in order to unwind and catch up with kiddos. Those loads of laundry that can sometimes be overwhelming are the result of many things, but most of all that means you have a family that you can love and be loved by.
The Toys, Books and Everything Else that Seem to Magically Reappear
One day that 2 year old will get the hang of putting everything back in its rightful place, but for now he just wants to show you his latest discovery.
In all honesty I catch myself daily, and I have to remind myself daily, that this is a BLESSING. I remember that tomorrow is not guaranteed. What I do with today is so very important. Today is a blessing, the messes are a blessing because it means we are here. My children and husband are here with me to create…the mess.
My children love to build forts out of the couch cushions. To be completely honest, I had to learn to indulge their imaginations. In the beginning all I saw was the cushions that would have to be put away. I was missing the story behind that mess, the magical kingdom that they had just created. I learned to be present and listen intently.
The Cereal Particles & Spilled Milk
Your little one is transitioning, your son or daughter is learning how to feed themselves and it’s a milestone. It’ll be messy, you will continue to clean your kitchen floors daily, BUT it’s only a small fraction of your day. Yes, it might seem like all of your day is consumed by tidying up, but don’t miss the blessing behind that mess.
Quit looking at the floor! Stop and catch a glimpse of that smile and little clapping hands. Celebrate with them, they did a good job getting a spoonful of food in their mouth.
Be Part of the Blessing Behind the Mess
We’ve watched two of our dear friends say good-bye to their little ones way too soon last year. I guarantee they would trade more loads of laundry, more spilled cereal and more bedtime books for just one more day.
Become part of the story behind that mess, be the blessing. You’ll never regret it!
